North American MGB Register "MG2004"

June 24-27, 2004

MG2004, the national convention of the North American MGB Register, was hosted by the MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre in nearby Parsipanny and Morristown, N.J., and some Keystone MG members went over to take part in the fun.

Terry Allen, Rick Brown, Ed Haas, Dick Horn, Dennis and Diane Silance, Bill and Ev Webb and Kim and Charles de Bourbon were there from the club.  It was as much about hanging out with lots of other MGBers as it was showing off our cars.  One of the best parts of the event was seeing so many MGBs out on the roads.  The parking lot behind the host hotel was set aside just for MGs, although Chaz’s 2001 Subaru Forester snuck in as a support vehicle by sporting a British flag . . . and a hatchback full of beer.

There was a fun rally through the countryside on Friday, prefacing an afternoon of games and food at the 1,000-acre Lewis Morris Park.  The weather was great all week except for Friday afternoon, when we had a real downpour.  Fortunately, the organizers had rented a large tent for the catered picnic, so everyone got to eat and moods were not much dampened.

Saturday was the day of the show, and it was great.  The cars were arranged in a semi-circle in the outfield of a ball field, making for an excellent presentation. As usual at the national MGB events, classes were divided into individual years of design change, instead of just “chrome bumper” vs. “rubber bumper.” This permitted some great competition and a chance to compare the differences between marks.

Two members won trophies. Terry Allen won second place in the 1973-74 Mark II honeycomb grill class for his fine Glacier White 1974 MGB, and Rick Brown won a second in the MGA class for his Subaru green 1960.

MG2005 will be held July 7-10, 2005, in Olympia, Wash., hosted by the MG Car Club Northwest Centre. It might be a bit far for most people to drive their MGs, but would make a great vacation destination!  Details already available at www.mg2005.com .
